Last of December
April 1, 2008
Cottonwood flames, cherry parallels fire —
out of the crack and hinge, quiet whistle
over the grate: a comfort to know the dead sing
even as they pass into the new year.

Fine work — all the economy of winter, shoring up her heat. Really lovely final image.
What form is this, (10/10/12/10 syllables)?
Thank you!
To answer Marie’s question: the form has no “official” designation, simply an organic response to the material. Having said that, I know subconciously I’m affected by a great deal of Asian poetry, both past and present, and perhaps this form is simply a response to and a homage to such sources. Thanks for your kind words about the poem!
